Barley Reduces LDL Cholesterol and Triglycerides

A new report has found that barley may play reduce cardiovascular risk.  People who eat barley are able to reduce their total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides compared with people who do not eat barley.

This may be because barley contains ß-glucan, a soluble fibre that has shown lipid-lowering effects.

Although barley did not have an effect on HDL cholesterol, it is significant that it does lower LDL and triglycerides.

So, how can you increase your intake of barley?

I often combine barley with brown rice.  It adds flavour and texture to the rice.  Barley can be added to soup, salads or porridge.  Enjoy!
